iOS 9 – Out Now
iOS 9 – Out Now
Apple released iOS 9, the ninth iteration of their mobile operating system that powers iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch on Wednesday 16 September. You can get it now through Software Update on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (Settings app > General > Software Update) or by connecting your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC running the latest version of iTunes.
iOS 9 adds new security features to keep our personal information safer in an ever-changing digital world, along with new features that continue to improve our experience with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Here are nine new features that we love and think you will too:
Go Back Quickly
When you tap on a link in one app that opens something in another app – a link in an email (in Mail app) that takes you to webpage (in Safari app) for example – you’ll now see a back button appear in the top-left corner that will take you back to the previous app.
Extend Your Battery Life
There’s a new Battery option in the Settings app that allows you to enable Low Power Mode. As its name suggests, Low Power Mode will cut back on unnecessary background functions that use up power in order to make your battery last longer.
Search For Settings
iOS has grown more capable and complex over the years. In the process, dozens upon dozens of new settings have been added to the Settings app. Stop endlessly tapping around for that setting you can’t find quickly – iOS 9 adds a search bar at the top of the Settings app now.
Hide Those Photos
Select a group of photos in the Photos app, tap on the Share button, and then tap on Hide. Easy! Now no one needs to see what really happened at the office party or the weekend evening out.
Make That Call Fast
Search for a Contact using the new Spotlight search (Swipe left from the first Home screen, or pull down from any Home screen) and you’ll see new buttons next to their name. Tap the phone button to call the contact, or tap the chat bubble button to message the contact.
Double The Fun For iPad
If you have an iPad Air / iPad mini 2 or newer, you can take advantage of the new Slide Over feature that brings in a second app as a sidebar – Just slide your finger in from the right. Depending on your iPad (iPad Air 2 or newer), you may also be able to resize the two apps by tapping and dragging the Slide Over borderline.
Sketch Out That Bright Idea
The newly revamped Notes app now lets you add your own drawings, checklists, photos and web links. There are now more formatting options to play around with in this old favourite app.
Dismiss Photos With A Swipe
Now here’s a great feature, especially for those with big iPhones. In the Photos app, you no longer have to reach all the way up to the top-left corner to dismiss a photo and return to the Photos or Albums page – Simply swipe down on the photo instead.
Get Your Head In The iCloud
Finally we have a way to see all the files stored in our iCloud account through the new iCloud Drive app. Go to the Settings app > iCloud > iCloud Drive and flip the switch marked Show on Home Screen to green. You are now good to go into your iCloud.
We always recommend that you back up your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch BEFORE commencing any software updates. This provides a safeguard against unexpected personal information loss through an unforeseen event during the software update process.
